Woodfire Workshop, July 11-13th
This 3 day session will provide a complete overview of fast-firing with wood. The first day includes technical information, slides, and discussion of wood-fired glazes and effects. Participants’ pots are glazed and the kiln is loaded. Day 2 consists of firing the 40 cubic foot fast-fire kiln designed by Fred Olsen, author of THE KILN BOOK. Fred also supervised the building of this kiln at a previous workshop, and a detailed account of the building of this kiln can be seen in his new edition of the book. Participants are involved in all aspects of the firing, which will reach Cones 10-11, and will take approximately 8-10 hours. On the third day we will cover kiln design, discuss slides of the construction of the fast-fire kiln design, unload the firing and discuss effects of flame and wood ash. Contact joan slack, Instructor, for more detailed information. Cost : $250

Artists and Potters of Prehistory, June 18th-22nd
From bird goddesses to Beaker Ware, come explore the past and the earliest creations of the artists of prehistory. We will journey back into the Stone Age, studying the first sculptures made by humans, and learn how to create and fire similar work with materials at hand. We will fashion tools that were used for texturing, reinforcement, and design work. Next, we will try techniques and processes of forming based upon the archaeological evidence that has been found. Thousands of years in artistic development will be discussed, comparing cultures from around the world.
Students will create prehistoric figurines, replicas, and functional pieces, learning forming techniques and design application from the Stone Age through the Bronze Age. After drying, we will fire the work in an outdoor kiln, and learn the nuances of pit firing as we go.
Students are also asked to bring along 5-20 bisque fired pieces for experimenting and firing in the alternative kilns during the workshop. Stacking and fuel requirements, surfaces treatments, and different firing methods will be discussed and applied.
The cost is $395 for the 5 day workshop, which includes instruction, clay, surface and texture materials, all equipment and supplies, and fuel for the firings. Camping is available on the grounds.
